Ballet: a Beautiful, Graceful History

Ballet is a demanding art. Ballet dancers are trained to move their bodies in unnatural ways and if they are good, they make it look natural. Sometimes it seems as if they are defying gravity with their leaps and they manage to keep a perfect balance as they spin around and around without becoming horribly dizzy and falling down.

The history of ballet goes back about 600 years to the Renaissance in Europe. Originally dancers would entertain audiences in the pauses between opera scenes. In 1581, the Ballet Comique de la Reine was performed in France and is usually considered to be the first ballet. In reality, ballet dancing is a classical art form that has been loved by generations of people across various cultures.

Ballet dancing is a form of performance dance with very strict standards concerning the movement of the feet and the lines of the body. It originated in the 15th century renaissance courts of Italy and was developed further into a form of concert dance in England, France and Russia. The word ballet comes from the Latin ballare, which means “to dance.”

Attending a classical ballet is not unlike attending any other theatrical performance. The difference is that instead of the performers telling the story verbally, they tell it through their bodies and facial expressions. The dancers will typically be accompanied by a full orchestra, and the music also helps audience members to interpret the story. Read the rest of this entry »
